Human CBD oil vs. pet CBD oil

Human CBD oils and pet CBD oils are manufactured in the same way. Essentially, CBD is CBD, and the extraction process is the same. However, when designing an oil specifically for pets, it is important to formulate appropriate milligram dosages that will produce optimal effects. Human CBD products are often too concentrated for pets, especially smaller pets. Dogs and cats require less CBD than we do, and while you could administer regular CBD oil at a lower dose, this can be tricky. It is also important to consider the THC concentration. Many regular CBD oils contain trace amounts of THC. Pets are especially sensitive to THC, so if you plan to give CBD oil to your pet, it is important to make sure it is completely THC-free.

At Royal Organics we have launched a 3% CBD oil specifically formulated for pets. All Royal Organics products are completely THC free.

How does CBD work for pets?

Like humans, pets have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for establishing and maintaining a variety of physiological processes. Mammals have a network of CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout their bodies, just like us. These receptors can be activated by both natural endocannabinoids (such as 2AG and anandamide) and external cannabinoids such as CBD. CB1 receptors are predominantly found in the brain and central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are more abundant in the immune system. CBD is thought to exert its beneficial effects by interacting with these receptors. Since our pets have an endocannabinoid system just like us, it makes sense that the benefits of CBD for pets are mostly the same as for us humans.

The benefits of CBD for your pet

CBD is useful as a therapy for a variety of conditions in pets, including the treatment of pain, anxiety, lack of appetite and many more. Although there is currently not enough scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of CBD in the actual treatment of these conditions, the research so far has been promising.

Just like us, pets feel the effects of anxiety and stress. Due to its relaxing and calming effects, CBD has a great use when it comes to relieving stress and anxiety in dogs, cats and all varieties of pets.

Possible side effects of CBD use on pets

CBD is safe for both humans and pets. However, you should still be aware of the potential risks that may exist. In most cases, the side effects experienced from CBD are minor and not serious, as long as you are careful with the amount you administer to your pet. Just like humans, here’s what to keep in mind when giving CBD to our best friend.

  1. Dry mouth: CBD can decrease saliva production; your pet may be thirstier than usual and need more water to drink. Therefore, be sure to keep a bowl of fresh water nearby and easily accessible.
  2. Drowsiness: The calming effects of CBD can cause drowsiness. Therefore, it is important to monitor your pet and ensure that you maintain a healthy dose that does not adversely affect your pet.

The general opinion is that CBD is highly beneficial for pets. Still, be aware of the potential risks and keep a close eye on your pet after administering any type of CBD product.
