Pain relief with CBD oil

Published on 27 November 2021 by Royal Organics

Studies have shown that cannabidiol can help with pain management.

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is currently spreading rapidly across Europe. Its demand has increased rapidly in recent years thanks to a number of potential health benefits. One of these is pain relief: studies (see source) have shown that CBD can reduce discomfort related to a variety of health conditions.

But can CBD oil really relieve pain and, if so, how does it work? We spoke to medical nutritionist and health author Dra. Sarah Brewer about the efficacy of cannabidiol for pain management.

Does CBD oil work for pain relief?

CBD is an option for many pain patients to help alleviate their symptoms, due to its antioxidant properties.

“CBD oil is one of the most useful supplements,” says Dr Brewer. “It is highly antioxidant, so it has anti-inflammatory effects on joints to improve pain and stiffness. CBD also has an analgesic effect to reduce pain perception in the brain.”

“CBD oil is a powerful antioxidant that suppresses inflammation”.

“Cannabidiol oil has direct effects on the endocannabinoid system in the brain,” says Dr Brewer. “This enhances the effects of other brain chemicals, such as serotonin and anandamide, to reduce pain perception. It is also a powerful antioxidant that suppresses inflammation.”

Do not take CBD if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are taking any medications, check with your doctor for interactions.

Dr. Brewer advises to select a CBD oil that is 100% natural and extracted from high quality hemp using a CO2 extraction process.

“Choose a supplier that provides a certificate of analysis, which confirms the level of CBD present and that the product contains no or negligible levels of THC.

Finally, compare the CBD levels in milligrams (mg) in each product to assess value for money. “Quality packaging will tell you the total amount of CBD supplied inside the package, as well as the amount per dose (whether it’s a capsule, gummy, oil dropper or spray) in milligrams, explains Dr Brewer. “Products with this labelling allow you to see exactly how much CBD you are buying and taking.”

Can CBD be used with other medicines?

If you have a health condition or are taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, always check with your doctor or pharmacist for possible drug-supplement interactions before taking CBD.

“CBD interacts with enzymes involved in the metabolisation of some drugs and may result in increased levels of drugs that could cause side effects,” says Dr Brewer.
